Course Overview

The person credited with this unit standard can identify and assess the risk of a potential spill, confine a spill should it happen and evaluate the incident to ensure a correct, safe clean up. They are also able to complete the required documentation in accordance with organisational procedures.

A person credited with this unit standard is capable of:

  • Identifying and assessing the risk.
  • Confining a spill.
  • Evaluating the incident and implementing clean up.
  • Completing required documentation and reports.
  • Selecting approaches to investigations which are appropriate for specified contents

  • Introduction to a Spill

  • Identify and assess the risk.
    • The risk related to the spill is identified and assessed according to standard operating procedures.
    • The risk affecting human health, the environment and property is determined according to standard operating procedures.
    • The identification and assessment of risk is explained and described as it relates to standard operating procedures.
    • The spilled material and quantity spilled are identified and corrective action is taken according to standard operating procedures.
    • The protective equipment is selective as it relates to the spill.
    • All relevant documentation is analysed to identify and use appropriate protective equipment.
  • Confine a spill
    • Spill is limited by blocking, diverting or confinement as it relates to the spill and according to international safety requirements.
    • Relevant methods to confine a spill is explained and described in accordance with international safety guidelines.
    • The source of the spill is identified and stopped according to standard operating procedures.
  • Evaluate the incident and implement clean up.
    • Incident is reassessed to develop a plan of action for implementing the spill clean-up plan.
    • The methods for cleaning spills are explained and described in accordance with standard operating procedures.
    • Hazardous waste is identified and dealt with in according to international safety guidelines.
    • Site, personnel, and equipment are decontaminated according to standard operating procedures.
    • The decontamination process is explained and described as it relates to international safety guidelines.
  • Complete required documentation and reports.
    • All notification and paperwork are completed in accordance with the standards operating procedures and national legislation.
    • The purpose for the completion of the reports is explained and described according to international safety guidelines.

Competency Scores

  • All learners are to achieve 80% and above for Theoretical Assessments.
