Course Overview

Every individual involved in the handling and transportation of dangerous goods has specific responsibilities and must adhere to prescribed regulations and operating standards. This includes consignors, manufacturers, importers, distributors, operators of road or rail vehicles, loading equipment operators, drivers and employers.

These requirements dictate how dangerous goods must be marked, packaged, documented, handled and transported.

This specialised training is designed for employees responsible for the management, supervision or control of dangerous goods transportation. The aim of the course is to enhance learners’ knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements and operational procedures for the safe transport of dangerous goods by road.

This course is accredited with the Transport Education Training Authority and covers Unit Standard 123259, NQF Level 3, 4 Credits.

What Learners Will Cover

Legislation and Regulatory Requirements
Learners will cover the National Road Traffic Act, Chapter VIII, and the regulations relating to the transportation of dangerous goods. The course also includes the legal duties of key stakeholders, including the operator, consignor, consignee and driver.

Operational Safety
The course covers product handling, personal safety, PPE usage, and pre-trip and post-trip inspection protocols, including pre-load and post-load checklists.

Documentation and Compliance
Learners will cover the correct use of dangerous goods declarations and transport emergency cards, as well as the documentation requirements for the safe handling and movement of dangerous goods.

Emergency Response
The course includes incident and accident reporting, basic spill prevention and clean-up procedures, fire safety and basic firefighting techniques. Learners will also cover the use of fire extinguishers and the classification of fires.

Practical Handling and Vehicle Requirements
Learners will cover vehicle compliance, including the correct use of UN numbers, placarding and load compatibility. Loading and unloading procedures are also covered, with a focus on driver responsibilities.

Assessment and Competency

All training programmes are outcome-based and assessed according to the relevant unit standards and outcomes. Assessment criteria consist of formative assessment, in-class assessments and a summative assessment.

All learners are required to achieve 80% and above for theoretical assessments.
