Liquefied Petroleum Gas – Safe Handling & Transportation Training
Course Overview
This course covers the safe handling, loading and transportation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, commonly known as LPG.
Designed for operators, supervisors and managers, the course supports compliance with safety and operational standards essential for LPG handling in the Gauteng region. Learners are introduced to the correct procedures, legal requirements, safety checks and emergency response actions required when working with LPG.

Day 1:
Theory and in-class assessments
08:00 – 13:00
Includes two 15-minute breaks
Final examination: 30 minutes
Course Objectives
LPG handling and transportation is regulated within the National Road Traffic Act of 1996, Chapter VIII, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Section 13. Drivers and operators are required to undergo training through an approved training body.
On completion of this course, learners will have a better understanding of the safe handling, loading and transportation requirements for LPG.
Theoretical Content
Learners will cover the following:
- Introduction to LPG handling, including an introduction video on LPG safety and loading procedures
- Safety and compliance, including key legal requirements, product handling, PPE requirements and operator responsibilities
- Personal and legal responsibilities of the Bulk Vehicle Operator, Contractor Supervisors and Depot Managers
- Loading and unloading procedures, including pre-load and post-load checklists, pre-trip inspection and incident management
- LPG leak detection techniques and emergency response requirements
- Customer service and care, including professional conduct during on-road and on-site operations
- Load security and stability to ensure secure handling
Observational and Safety Checks
The course includes practical safety awareness relating to:
- Daily pre-trip inspection reports and checks for vehicle and equipment conditions
- PPE requirements, including the proper use of safety boots, gloves, helmets, seat belts and other required safety equipment
- LPG leak and fire prevention, including techniques for detecting and managing leaks and understanding fire safety
Emergency Procedures
Learners will cover:
- Incident and accident reporting guidelines
- Accurate reporting and emergency response requirements
- Basic spill prevention and clean-up
- Use of a spill kit
Fire Safety and Fighting
The course includes fire safety awareness and basic firefighting techniques, including:
- Elements and classes of fires
- Identification of fire hazards
- Fire extinguisher use
- The PASS method for operating fire extinguishers
- Techniques for handling different fire types
- Practical video demonstration on basic firefighting
Assessment and Competency
All training programmes are outcome-based and assessed according to the relevant unit standards and outcomes. Assessment criteria consist of formative assessment, in-class assessments, summative assessment and practical assessments.
All learners are required to achieve 80% and above for theoretical assessments.
