Course Overview

This course is for learners who need to demonstrate the ability to conduct a risk assessment in the workplace.

The course enables learners to prepare for and conduct a risk assessment, as well as initiate remedial actions for hazards identified and risks assessed. This practical training provides learners with the necessary tools and skills to carry out hazard identification and risk assessments in their workplace.

The aim of the course is to enable learners to make responsible and informed contributions to the health and safety effort in their workplace.

Day 1:
Theory
08:00 – 16:00
Includes two 15-minute breaks
In-class assessments

Course Objectives

On completion of this course, learners will be able to explain the specified requirements needed to conduct a baseline risk assessment.

Learners will cover the process of identifying hazards and assessing the associated risks, as well as the information required to conduct the baseline risk assessment.

The course also covers the definitions and applications of the baseline risk assessment process and how these are applied to identified hazards and associated risks.

Learners will be able to understand, explain and apply:

  • Hazard identification and risk assessment processes
  • Different types of hazard identification and risk assessments in the workplace
  • The appropriate hazard identification and risk assessment methods for different circumstances
  • Techniques used in hazard identification and risk assessment in the workplace
  • How to conduct a risk assessment using the HIRA methodology
  • How to identify applicable control measures

Additional Course Outcomes
The learner will also be able to explain:

  • The sequence of applying control measures when dealing with hazards
  • The importance of identifying, dealing with and reporting hazards
  • The application of different types of risk assessments
  • The importance of ensuring that personal protective equipment is available, operational, fit for purpose, and used in accordance with its design and specified requirements
  • The consequences of incorrect or inadequate PPE use in relation to health and safety
  • How team members are selected and trained in a manner that fosters teamwork and avoids conflict
  • The required arrangements in terms of venues, sites and attendance according to the selected methodology

Practical Application

Learners will be able to identify control measures, record deviations, and take action in line with specified operational procedures.

Final reports will be completed and submitted to designated personnel on time, with dates proposed for subsequent control assessments.

Assessment and Competency

All training programmes are outcome-based and assessed according to the relevant unit standards and outcomes. Assessment criteria consist of formative assessment, in-class assessments and a summative assessment.

All learners are required to achieve 80% and above for theoretical assessments.
